Cuyo
Leaned on the Andes Mountain Range, the region of Cuyo
is an arid mountainous area, as opposed to the Andean
Patagonia, but it is crossed by deep rivers descending
from snowy hills which make the territory a non-barren
plain. Cuyo comprises the provinces of Mendoza, San
Juan and San Luis. Thanks to the human hand, several
irrigation piping labors were done to turn the zone
into fertile land, apt for viticulture.
The vineyards produce a large selection of wines of
outstanding quality and worldwide reputation. Visits
to wineries and wine tasting tours constitute a celebrated
tourist attraction.
Peaks of almost 23,000 ft. form the Andean massif, namely
the Aconcagua and the Tupungato. The show of nature
represents the chief attraction of this region.
Renowned ski resorts such as ‘Las Leñas’
and ‘Los Penitentes’ offer exceptional comfort
and first-rate snow to practice this sport.
Located in northern San Juan, we shall find the Ischalaguasto
National Park, better known as ‘Valle de la Luna’
(Valley of the Moon). Due to its geological morphology,
this valley is one of the most prosperous fossil deposits
in the world.
The province of San Luis is clearly divided into two
regions: a desert in the south, and a mountain orchard
adjacent to the province of Córdoba towards the
noth, being the colonial city of Merlo the principal
tourist center.
