Andean
Northwest
This region is formed by an elevated plateau of almost
13,000 ft high called Puna, with landscapes of stunning
beauty, crossed by numerous high mountain ranges and
valleys known as ‘quebradas’ (gorges), such
as the magnificent Humahuaca, in Jujuy, with its picturesque
villages and the colorful display of enormous rock formations
and snowy peaks.
Traveling by the ‘Tren de las Nubes’ (Train
to the Clouds), named that way owing to the great height
in which it passes through), allows us to admire the
wondrous scenaries of the zone in all their splendor.
The Andean Northwest inhabitants inherited a rich legacy
from the past, especially in the towns of Tilcara, Humahuaca,
Purmamarca and Cachi, among others, combining the Pre-Columbian
culture with their profound Christian faith.
More to the south, we find the Talampaya Provincial
Park in La Rioja, with its magnificent canyons carved
by the wind through thousands of years. Heading southwest,
we can visit the thermal baths of Río Hondo in
the province of Santiago del Estero, well-known for
their healing powers.
Outdoor
activities: Historical tourism; trekking; rafting;
paragliding; horseback riding; thermal baths; sport
fishing; water sports; flora and fauna watching.
